WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SINGLE-MODE AND MULTI-MODE FIBRE OPTIC CABLING SOLUTIONS?

What is Single-Mode Fibre Cabling

Single-mode fibre is one of the two optical fibre types, the other being multi-mode. Single-mode fibre cabling is designed to initiate a single light mode with an optical core of 9µm. The smaller core size leads to longer transmission distances and higher bandwidths.

The optical fibre itself includes three key parts: the core, the cladding and the coating. The core of the single-mode fibre is much smaller than that of the multi-mode fibre.

There are three fundamental diameter sizes for fibre cores; 9µm for OS1 and OS2 and 62.5-µm or 50-µm core diameter for OM2, OM3, OM4 and OM5 Cables. The seamless design, small core and single light wave create an unrivalled solution for high transmission speeds.

ADVANTAGE: It supports high bandwidths and high speeds up to 10Gbps for about 10Km.

DISADVANTAGE: Because it has a small core diameter, Single-mode connectors and pigtail cords are very expensive.

What is Multi-Mode Fibre Cabling?

A multi-mode fibre cable is designed to initiate multiple, and simultaneous, light modes with an optical core of 50 µm. In comparison to single-mode fibre optic cabling, multi-mode is designed to transmit across shorter distances.

Multi-mode fibre provides high bandwidth at high speeds across moderate distances. Light waves are spread into various modes, or paths, as they travel via the core of the cable, usually at 850 or 1300 nm.

ADVANTAGE: Multimode cables are less expensive to operate, install, and maintain.

DISADVANTAGE: Multi-mode fibres may not be suitable for high-speed data transmission.
